Arizona Travel ID Delayed Until 2025 (Updated)

With the outbreak of Covid-19 causing delays, closures and abrupt interruption of routines – the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has chosen to extend the deadline of the Arizona Travel ID until 2025. Originally, residents of Arizona had a deadline of October 1st, 2020 to obtain an ID that is compliant with the REAL ID Act for traveling on planes and entering federal buildings. 

The goal of the delay is to reduce customer traffic to MVD locations throughout the state while the population continues to deal with the current public health situation. What is the Real ID in Arizona?

The REAL ID Act was passed by the U.S. congress in 2005 with the goal of tightening identification that people use to travel with. After the terrorism that occurred during 9/11, it was apparent that stricter guidelines needed to be set. Currently, the Arizona driver’s licenses are not compliant with the REAL ID Act and therefore need to be updated for the safety and security of all U.S. citizens.

How Can I Get a Travel ID in Arizona?

It is a good idea to get your Travel ID sooner than later. However, since the deadline has moved to 2023, you still have plenty of time. The good news is that you do not have to attempt to use the MVD. Instead, you can choose to visit a 1 Stop Motor Vehicle Services locations to grab your ID. With extended hours and friendly service, it is a win-win situation.

To start the process, you must first begin an online application. Once that form has been completed, you must take documentation to a 1 Stop Motor Vehicle Services location. You will need the following to ensure you will receive a Real ID:

1 of the following proof of identity:

• Original Birth Certificate
• Current US Passport or Passport Card

AND 1 of the following proof of social security:

• Social Security Card
• W-2 form
• 1099 Form
• Paycheck stub

AND 2 other documents proving Arizona residency

• Utility bills
• Bank/credit card settlement
• Insurance policy
• Current Arizona license or registration with current address, etc.

Other Travel ID considerations:

• Minors under the age of 18 are not required to have a Travel ID, as long as they are traveling alongside someone who does have it.
• All airports in Arizona will require the Travel ID to travel beginning May 7, 2025.
• Your new ID will be mailed to you.
• Smile! You will need your picture taken at the time of application.
